Why does SkyTab include the hardware for free?

The program is built around a 36-month merchant agreement that covers card processing. Shift4 makes its money on processing volume, which lets them include $2,000+ worth of hardware at no upfront cost. It's a real deal — but read the merchant agreement carefully before signing, especially if you're considering switching processors within a few years.

Can I use my own card processor with SkyTab?

No. SkyTab is designed to run on Shift4 processing — that's part of the program that makes the hardware and $29.99/month software pricing possible. If you need processor flexibility, Clover or a more open POS is a better fit. If you're comfortable with Shift4 processing, SkyTab is one of the best deals on the market.

What's the difference between SkyTab and Clover?

Clover is processor-agnostic — you can use Clover with many different payment processors, including us. SkyTab is locked to Shift4 processing, but in exchange you get free hardware and a lower software subscription. Clover has a broader app marketplace and works for retail and services too; SkyTab is laser-focused on restaurants and bars.

Is SkyTab really rebranding to Shift4 Dine?

Yes. Shift4 announced that SkyTab POS is rebranding as Shift4 Dine in May 2026. The product, hardware, features, and pricing are not changing — only the name. Anything sold today as SkyTab will continue to operate identically after the rebrand. We use the SkyTab name on this page because that's still what most merchants search for and recognize.

How long does install take?

Hardware ships in 1–2 weeks once your merchant account is approved. Shift4's in-house menu team builds out your menu at no additional cost — this typically takes 1–2 weeks depending on menu complexity. Once hardware and menu are ready, on-site install and staff training is usually a single day. Most restaurants are fully live within 3–4 weeks of contract signature.

Does SkyTab work if my internet goes down?

Yes. SkyTab's hybrid cloud architecture stores critical data locally on each device. If your internet drops, order entry, kitchen routing, and even card processing continue running. Once connectivity returns, the system syncs automatically.

What restaurants is SkyTab NOT a good fit for?

SkyTab is purpose-built for restaurants and bars — so it's not the best fit for retail, services (salons, repair shops), or non-food businesses. If you switch processors frequently or want full processor flexibility, Clover or Square is a better choice. And if you're a high-volume enterprise chain looking for deep customization, Oracle Micros or NCR Aloha may serve you better.
