When mainstream processors drop firearms, we pick them up.

Firearms processing is a category where political risk, not financial risk, drives most processor decisions. Stripe, Square, and PayPal all explicitly prohibit firearms sales in their acceptable use policies — not because firearms have high chargeback rates (they don't, actually) or unusual fraud profiles (they don't), but because the major payment platforms have made a corporate decision not to support the industry.

The result for FFL holders and firearms retailers: sudden account terminations after years of clean processing, frozen funds, no warning, no appeal. Many firearms businesses have cycled through three or four processors trying to find one that won't drop them mid-season.

Payment Gurus works with sponsor banks that explicitly support the firearms vertical — including FFL dealers, ranges, gunsmiths, ammunition retailers, and firearms eCommerce. Our underwriters are firearms-friendly, our pricing is competitive (firearms is actually low-risk financially), and we don't make corporate policy decisions about which legal industries we'll support.

How we structure your account

The Payment Gurus approach.

Each high-risk account gets a custom placement strategy — not a one-size-fits-all retail boarding flow. Here's what that looks like for firearms.

Businesses we serve

FFL-licensed firearms dealers (Type 01, 02, 07, 08, 09, 10, 11), shooting ranges and training facilities, gunsmiths and custom builders, ammunition manufacturers and retailers, optics and accessory retailers, hunting outfitters, firearms eCommerce platforms, and gun shows. We do not process for unlicensed sales or transfers.

FFL-compliant transaction handling

Firearms transactions have unique compliance requirements: background check completion before transfer, age verification, prohibited person screening, multi-state shipping rules, and ATF Form 4473 record-keeping. We work with gateways and POS systems that integrate properly with FFL workflows so payments and compliance happen in the same flow.

Card-brand registration done correctly

Firearms transactions code as MCC 5712 (furniture and home furnishings, used for general firearms) or MCC 5941 (sporting goods, used for sporting firearms). We code your account correctly to avoid card-brand registration issues and ensure your transactions clear cleanly.

Online & eCommerce firearms support

Firearms eCommerce is increasingly common but adds compliance complexity (shipping to FFL holders only, state-by-state legal restrictions, age verification, ATF compliance). We work with established firearms eCommerce platforms (GunBroker, GunsAmerica, etc.) and custom-built sites equally well.

Frequently asked

Firearms Processing questions.

Why do Stripe, Square, and PayPal refuse to process firearms?

All three platforms list firearms under their prohibited business categories. This is a corporate policy decision, not a regulatory requirement — firearms sales by licensed dealers are entirely legal in the United States. Mainstream payment platforms have chosen to exit the category for reputational reasons, leaving FFL dealers and firearms retailers dependent on specialized merchant account providers.

Do I need a special FFL-compliant POS system?

Most general retail POS systems work fine for firearms sales as long as your workflow includes proper 4473 documentation, background check verification, and prohibited-person screening before transferring the firearm. We can also integrate with firearms-specific POS platforms (like Coreware, AXIS Retail, or Orchid) if you need deeper inventory tracking and ATF compliance integration.

Can I process online firearms sales?

Yes. Online firearms sales are legal as long as the firearm is shipped to a licensed FFL holder near the buyer for in-person background check and transfer. We board firearms eCommerce sites that follow proper FFL-to-FFL shipping protocols, age verification, and state-by-state legal compliance.

What's the typical pricing for a firearms merchant account?

Firearms processing is actually low-risk financially (low chargeback rates, established customer relationships) but high-risk reputationally. Pricing typically runs 2.5–3.5% all-in — closer to retail than most high-risk categories. We price interchange-plus with full disclosure.

Will my account get suddenly terminated like with Stripe?

Our sponsor banks have written firearms acceptance into their portfolio strategy — meaning they're not going to wake up one morning and decide to exit the category. We've had firearms merchants on our portfolio for years without disruption. The exception would be a specific compliance issue (FFL revocation, unlicensed sales), not a policy change.
