Cash Register Express

The retail POS that just works.

Cloud POS systems are everywhere now, and most retailers will tell you they work fine — until the internet goes down on the busiest Saturday of the month and the entire system grinds to a halt. Cash Register Express is the answer to that problem.

CRE is a Windows-based POS that runs locally on your hardware. Your transactions, your inventory, your reports — all of it lives on the workstation in your store, not in someone else's data center. When connectivity drops, you keep ringing up customers like nothing happened. When it comes back, everything syncs.

It's been on the market for over two decades, refined by tens of thousands of retail operators, and now sold under Heartland/pcAmerica. It's not flashy. It's not cloud-trendy. But for retailers who want a system that does exactly what it's supposed to do, on hardware they own — it's hard to beat.

Built for

Retailers who want control of their system.

01 / Specialty retail

Inventory done right

Liquor stores, gift shops, hobby shops, hardware stores — anywhere the SKU count is high and the categories are deep. CRE handles thousands of items with case break tracking, vendor management, and PO automation.

02 / Multi-store operators

Scale to 500+ locations

Enterprise version supports multi-store operations with central inventory, store transfers, and consolidated reporting. The same software that runs a single shop scales to a small chain without re-platforming.

03 / Restaurants & bars

Quick-service & casual dining

CRE also handles restaurant operations — check splitting, kitchen printer routing, table service, modifiers, and bar tab management. Not as restaurant-optimized as SkyTab or SpotOn, but a solid choice for QSR operators who want the Windows install.

What makes CRE different

The features cloud POSes don't have.

Most POS systems on the market today are cloud-only SaaS — dependent on internet, paid monthly forever, with rigid feature sets. CRE is the alternative.

Gift cards & customer tracking

Native loyalty & gift card engine

Built-in gift card issuance, redemption, and balance tracking — no third-party plug-in required. Customer profiles auto-populate from purchases, with sales history, average ticket, and birthday tracking. The kind of CRM most cloud POSes charge extra for, included.

Native dual pricing

Built-in cash discount support

CRE supports dual pricing for credit card payments natively — meaning you can run a compliant cash discount program directly from the POS without bolt-on hardware. Learn more about cash discount →

Runs offline

Your store keeps running

Internet goes down? CRE doesn't care. All transactions, inventory lookups, and reporting run on your local hardware. Cloud POSes turn into expensive paperweights when connectivity drops. CRE keeps ringing up customers.

One-time license option

Own your software

Buy CRE outright with a perpetual license (or subscribe monthly from $40 if you prefer). Either way, you're not locked into perpetual SaaS payments. Many retailers prefer the buy-once model — pay for the software, then pay only for support and updates.

Deep peripheral support

Works with hardware from every industry

Under-counter scanner-scales (grocery), coin dispensers (high-volume convenience), caller ID integration (pizza shops), customer displays, bag dispensers, scales, and dozens of receipt printer brands. The system was built to integrate with anything.

Strong inventory engine

Built for SKU-heavy retail

Multi-vendor, multi-location inventory tracking. PO automation, case breaks, mix-and-match pricing, expiration tracking, and detailed sales-velocity reporting. Built for businesses with thousands of items, not just a couple dozen.

Why buy through us

Same CRE. Better deal.

Cash Register Express is sold through Heartland/pcAmerica directly and through reseller partners like Payment Gurus. The software is the same, the hardware options are the same. What you get with us is what comes around it.

Honest, disclosed processing

We process payments through your CRE system with interchange-plus pricing and full disclosure — no buy-rate markups, no opaque tiered pricing. You see exactly what the card networks charge and exactly what we charge on top. The processing is built into your install from day one.

Cash discount setup, dialed in

CRE supports dual pricing natively, but configuring it properly — signage compliance, receipt formatting, customer disclosure — is where most installs go wrong. We've set it up dozens of times. We know exactly what the card networks require and how to make sure your program is fully compliant from day one.

Hardware staging & install

Windows-based POSes need to be configured before they leave the box — drivers loaded, software licensed, peripherals tested, Windows updated, security policies set. We stage every system before it ships, label every cable, and walk your staff through the system on install day. No "ship the box and call IT" experience.

Ongoing Windows support

One of the honest trade-offs with CRE: it's Windows-based, which means Windows updates, antivirus, and the occasional hardware fault are part of life. We provide support for the whole stack, not just the POS application. When something breaks, you call us — not Microsoft, not the hardware vendor, not pcAmerica.

Multi-store rollout experience

If you're scaling to multiple locations, we handle the multi-store setup — central inventory configuration, store transfers, consolidated reporting, and remote management. We've done it for retailers with 2 stores and retailers with 30+.

Frequently asked

Cash Register Express, answered.

How much does Cash Register Express cost?

Two main licensing models. Subscription: From $40/month per terminal — software, updates, and support included. Perpetual license: Buy outright (typically $700–$1,500 depending on edition) and pay only for support/updates after the first year. Hardware bundles range from roughly $1,000 to $2,500+ per terminal depending on configuration (touchscreen, printer, scanner, cash drawer, customer display). We quote real numbers based on your specific operation.

How does CRE handle reporting and analytics?

CRE has strong built-in reporting — daily sales summaries, employee performance, inventory turn, profit margins by category, and detailed audit trails. The optional OnCloudPortal add-on extends this with a remote dashboard accessible from your phone, tablet, or laptop so you can check your store's performance without being on-site. For specialty retailers tracking high SKU counts, the depth of CRE's reporting is one of its biggest advantages over simpler cloud POSes.

What about cash discount and dual pricing?

CRE natively supports dual pricing for credit card payments — meaning the POS can show a "cash price" and "card price" automatically, and the receipt prints both correctly. Combined with our cash discount setup expertise, it's one of the cleanest ways to run a compliant cash discount program. See our full cash discount guide →

Is CRE really Windows-only?

Yes — CRE runs on Windows, not iOS, Android, or Mac. This is intentional. Windows-based POS hardware tends to be more durable, supports a wider range of peripherals, and runs natively on the workstation. The trade-off: you (or we) need to manage Windows updates, antivirus, and the occasional driver issue. We handle this as part of our managed install.

How does CRE handle internet outages?

Beautifully. CRE is locally-installed software running on your workstation — it doesn't need the internet to function. Transactions, inventory, reports, and card processing all keep working during outages. When connectivity returns, everything syncs. This is one of the biggest reasons retailers choose CRE over cloud POSes.

Does CRE work for restaurants?

Yes — CRE has restaurant features including check splitting, kitchen printer routing, table service, modifiers, and bar tab management. That said, for hospitality-first operations, we usually recommend SkyTab or SpotOn instead — they're purpose-built for restaurants and include things like online ordering, reservations, and loyalty natively. CRE is excellent if you want one system across retail + light restaurant operations (like a deli or coffee shop with retail products), or if you specifically want the Windows install.

How does CRE compare to NRS POS?

Different fits. NRS POS is purpose-built for convenience stores and specialty retail with c-store-specific features (panic alarm, age verification, EBT, gas pump integration). CRE is broader retail with stronger general inventory engine and multi-store capabilities. If you're running a c-store, NRS is usually the better choice. If you're running general retail or a multi-store operation, CRE is usually better.

Who shouldn't buy CRE?

Operators who specifically want a modern cloud-first POS experience — fully managed updates, iPad-based hardware, or built-in CRM and email marketing — will be happier with Clover, Square, or SpotOn. Restaurants should usually look at SkyTab or SpotOn first. C-stores should look at NRS. CRE is the right pick when you want a Windows-based, locally-running POS with serious inventory chops — particularly for specialty retail and multi-store operations.
